The Beings of the Land (90 minutes)
On the sandstone canyon walls at Writing-on-Stone/Áísínai'pi there are pictures that have been painted and carved by the Niisitapi (Blackfoot People). These images can tell us a lot about traditional ways of life of including the First Nations relationships with the ksaah-kom-mi-ta-piiks (beings of the land) including animals found on the prairies of Southern Alberta. Journey with a Parks' interpreter into the Archaeological Preserve for a family friendly walk to view the pictures and to learn more about the importance of the plants, animals, and the lifeways of the people of the plains.
The tour is a low to moderate walk along an unpaved path that includes some stairs with no handrails. The tour is approximately 600 metres (4-6 city blocks) in length, with 3-4 stopping points with benches along the way and is completed over the period of 1.5 hours.

In 2011 the park expanded is borders to include a picturesque valley known as Haffner Coulee. This remote area is a protected zone with unique landforms, petroglyphs, plants, and animals. Join us for a 3-hour guided walk to explore this area and to take in the scenic beauty.
You will be bussed short distance to a staging area to begin the hike. This is a remote area with no developed trails, infrastructure (including bathrooms) or facilities. Please be prepared for a strenuous hike on uneven terrain and bring your own snacks and a minimum of 2l of water. The hike is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. No children under 12. No smoking. No dogs.

The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) first camped at Writing-on-Stone / Áísínai'pi during the march west in 1874 and returned in 1887 to establish an outpost. Shortly after the post closed in 1918, it burned to the ground, however a replica now stands in its place.
Join a Park Interpreter for an adventurous hike back in time - across the river to visit the Writing-on-Stone Police Post replica.
To get there, the Interpreter will lead you through the water of the Milk River. In addition to visiting the post, the Interpreter will lead you into Police Coulee to Signature Rock and beyond.
This hike is rigorous. In addition the river crossing, the hike will take you over rough terrain, along game trails and will include some steep grades.
